As I become to know more and more of you on this site, it makes me wonder how many of you became project managers in the first place. Did you know you wanted to be one when younger? Was it due to your changing adult preferences and career changes? What path did you take to becoming a PM? Would you do it all over again if given the chance? Do you like being a PM?

Hi Michael,
I fell into project management. I was doing projects before there was a career path in the organization where I worked. When I discovered project management as a career path it was almost a religious awakening, (tongue in cheek humor).
I have always had a pathological need to organize things and work and project management fit right into that need.
Would I do it again absolutely, actually I sort of did. I married a project manager so you know what conversation at the dinner table is like; scope creep this and risk management that, blah, blah, blah. Even the dogs get bored with us. It is a good thing we don't have kids because they would probably turn out to be bigger control freaks then my husband and I are. Saving Changes...

I started as an engineer working on major projects. I majored in front end planning and investment analysis and as a result became project focused and achieved many of my successes through effective project management. Saving Changes...
Was doing PM work for YEARS without realizing it was a career! Once I learned about PMP and PMI...I shifted and transferred my skill set. Now I have the best of both my past and future!

Hey Michael, good question.
I was migrating to another country a decade back and thought PMP would help in opening doors for my career so I went for it. I was practicingit before that for 7 years but never thought of getting a formal certification. During my prep for PMP, I learned a lot and as I got into more details, I kept falling in love with different aspects of it.
