As I become to know more and more of you on this site, it makes me wonder how many of you became project managers in the first place. Did you know you wanted to be one when younger? Was it due to your changing adult preferences and career changes? What path did you take to becoming a PM? Would you do it all over again if given the chance? Do you like being a PM?
Thanks for your openness and honesty.

Each person in this world is a project manager. Each person in this world performs project mangement activities from the time she/he wakes up to the time she/he goes to bed. The degree of formality is what varies when those practices must be applied to work place.

As many of us - not planned at all. My first company in my career wanted to get a specific objective get done. I got an assignment and that was the start of my PM path that is lasting now for quite some time with happy/ sad experience.

Hi Michael. First I known project management in the Master degree class. And I was lucky which I could apply project management in my job too. I love it. I try to take class, read and learn more for pass PMP certificate. At Present I'm project manger and work in the company which has more seniority and I'm youngest in team. I still not disclose my certificate status. I would like to grow in this career and implement my certification.

I was in college, majoring in Management Information Systems and took a Microsoft Project class and fell in love. From there, I didn't know I would end up being a project manager, I just knew then that I loved the art of Project Management. Once I was in the workforce and I dabbled with QA and BA work, I gravitated toward project management and those skills showed through to the IT management in my company and soon after I was a made a Jr. Project Manager - now a Sr. Project Manager at the same company.

Hi Michael,
I fell into project management. I was doing projects before there was a career path in the organization where I worked. When I discovered project management as a career path it was almost a religious awakening, (tongue in cheek humor).

I have always had a pathological need to organize things and work and project management fit right into that need.

Would I do it again absolutely, actually I sort of did. I married a project manager so you know what conversation at the dinner table is like; scope creep this and risk management that, blah, blah, blah. Even the dogs get bored with us. It is a good thing we don't have kids because they would probably turn out to be bigger control freaks then my husband and I are.

I started as an engineer working on major projects. I majored in front end planning and investment analysis and as a result became project focused and achieved many of my successes through effective project management.

Was doing PM work for YEARS without realizing it was a career! Once I learned about PMP and PMI...I shifted and transferred my skill set. Now I have the best of both my past and future!

Many things in life are a project so I can relate very well to your experience of realising you were a project manager once the role was articulated

Hey Michael, good question.
I was migrating to another country a decade back and thought PMP would help in opening doors for my career so I went for it. I was practicingit before that for 7 years but never thought of getting a formal certification. During my prep for PMP, I learned a lot and as I got into more details, I kept falling in love with different aspects of it.
Thanks for a stroll down the memory lane. :)
