What are the tasks one would do when starting a role as a product owner?

They would obviously look at the product backlog, but what are specific tasks they would do to ensure a successful start in the role?

I agree with Peter and I would even more emphasize the VALUE - in my opinion everything else is in function of the value. And to ensure healthy perception of the value, PO should have both business and technical overview upon the product.

Thanks for the response - I feel this defines features and qualities of the role quite well. What specific tasks would you do when starting a product owner role, to ensure you hit the ground running?

First thing I would do is because a SME for the product I am owning. This means understanding the functionality, how and why its used, the user base, the roadmap for the product, the business gripes, etc.... Lots of places for you to start - just dig in and tackle.
