Need to understand enough to have a visual representation of the process. When reading the question, look for key words. Then ask yourself, where am I in the process? Then, what next?

Tips for attending situational questions

1.Read the questions carefully and figure out what is relevant to questions - Many times there are phrases which are just mind dis-tractor
2.Highlight the words in the question which is related to situation like – CPI, SPI, Control Cost, Communication, critical path, situations like, hurricanes , landslides, difference in opinion, submitting proposal, reviewing vendor etc.
3.Start reading the answer – multiple choice from bottom (I personally found it useful) this will help in reading the entire answer properly.
4.Strike out the answer not at all relevant to question
5.Relate your answer with the key words highlighted and mark your best answer.
Hope this helps.

Fully agree with Sergio's comment: PMI PMBOK framework + experience.
Only one additional comment: When you read the situational questions, you always have to put yourself into the shoes of a PM who leads a BIG project when you apply the PMBOK framework.

Always understand the ITTO's fully because the questions are based to determien your level of understanding, not memorizing.

All good advice from my colleagues. Situational questions is really about applying PMBOK, not your experience, in projects.

ITTO is one of the main worries of PMP aspirants. However, the exam tests candidates on Project Management concepts. Most of the exam Q are situational Q and cannot be answered by pure mugging up. But if you understand the PMBOK Guide concepts logically, then ITTO questions can be answered easily.
