You cannot simply say "this are the 3 major tools and once I am going to apply them this is sufficient to run project management". It always depends on the industry and type of project. When you consider the PMBOK framework with the project management processes you will find out that different tools apply to the certain processes, but whether to use to what extent and in what combination or not to use, is a question of experience and the specific project / project environment. As project management at its heart is working together with people, from my experience you always have to look after communication and stakeholder management (and the tools behind as indicated in the PMBOK) without "downgrading" the other processes by this statement.

I think you are underestimating the complexity of project management if you assume that there are only 3 major tools. Can you build a house just using a hammer, saw and boards? And what do you consider a 'tool'?

Basically I think you are trying to find three main tools for managing a project. There are many many tools though and each one is used depending on the situation. Choosing the right tool, at the right time, will lead the project to success.

The title of your topic uses component, yet your question asks about tools. These are not necessarily the same.

Is it possible that your question is meant to come up with the top three tools, rather than only three?

Hi Gerald, I agree with the folks responses that you'll probably need to elaborate a bit to be provided with better feedback. 3 "software" tools I need would be Microsoft Project, A SharePoint environment to house documentation, A JIRA for agile projects. I heard by using Microsoft Team Foundation Server, we can integrate Microsoft Project projects and agile projects, although I haven't used it before.
