Everything is challenging in project management. I find timelines and communication sometimes very challenging but it varies from one project to another.

Project Management Challenges:
1. Undefined Goals – When goals are not clearly identified, the whole project and team can suffer.
2. Inadequate Skills for the Project – A project sometimes requires skills that the project's contributors do not possess.
3. Unclear expectations - does not have detailed requirements and expectations from all stakeholders.
4. Poor Communication – Project managers provide direction at every step of the project, so each team leader knows what's expected.
5. Impossible Deadlines
6. Resource Deprivation – In order for a project to be run efficiently and effectively, management must provide sufficient resources.
7. Lack of Stakeholder Engagement – A disinterested team member, client, CEO or vendor can destroy a project.

Another word for project management is managing challenges and these challenges can come up in any phase of the project. At times the biggest challenge is getting the project started, these challenges may manifest in the form of delays in obtaining clearances like environmental or other statutory bodies, obtaining the right quantum of finances and the resources to get the project going.

Once the project is up and running project manager and project team may face challenges every day. Changing customer needs, non availability of people, conflict among team members, varying communication requirements of various stakeholders, financial risks, risks related to schedule delays, social, economic, political, technological and environmental risks, non performance of vendors and suppliers, issues during the project hand over to end customer.

These are some the challenges faced while managing a project.

I would agree that communication is one of the biggest challenges.

I like Atul's point. Maybe we should change our titles to challenge managers?

Project Management is all about challenges. These challenges could range from not having the information needed to start the project, to difficult stakeholders, to vendor challenges. With every project, comes new challenges, and not every project has the same challenges. So everyone above has made excellent points on the challenges project managers face. One thing to also note is, as the world of business, the economy, and people's expectations change, so will the challenges of the project. A PM's job is to overcome these challenges to make the project successful.
