I am also seeking mentorship from a project management professional in the DC area. I want to expand my network, while gaining valuable insight to the profession. Thanks in advance!

Stephanie, finding a mentor to guide you is a good starting point. Also do not be afraid to acknowledge your shortcoming and show a willingness to learn, your question already indicates this. Make a 'nuisance' of yourself and try to get in on every single opportunity you can to shadow an experienced PM. Many get into PM via the administrator role which exposes you to a lot of learning opportunities without having the burden of full accountability. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you for the advice! Seems like I am starting on the right track. I am also currently studying for the CAPM to show a commitment to the field. I am hoping this will also assist in landing a solid PM position. Thanks again!

hi Stephanie

As long as you have the drive to bring results and are a go-getter, open minded person with strong communication skills; rest is all process. With these traits, you can run projects with ease and bring them to completion on time and one budget.

Thank you! Yes I did join the PWI DC Chapter and applied to be the social media chair. I am definitely looking forward to attending my first event.
Continue to develop skills that are important in project management - organizational and planning, communications, and interpersonal and leadership skills. Relate your current duties to the project management processes mentioned in the PMBOK guide. Apply the project management framework to ordinary projects in your life - organizing a birthday party, renovating your bedroom, or joining a marathon.

The answer to limited experience: gain more experience.

Some thoughts on how you can go about it. Frist, consider turning personal activities and events into "projects". That will get you comfortable with the processes, artefacts and techniques.

Second, consider doing volunteer work. Many chartiable organizations need events to be managed. These opportunities can help build up your résumé.

All the best on your journey.
