Is there any generic name for stage gate process?

A generic name that comes first to my mind would be: Linear process, as a Stage-Gate System is a conceptual and operational road map for moving a new-product project from idea to launch. Stage-Gate divides the effort into distinct, structured stages separated by management decision gates (gatekeeping).

Progressive funding or approval process comes to mind as a stage gate provides multiple opportunities for the organization to pull the plug OR continue to invest in the product/project.

I've often seen the phrases "hand-off" and "cut-overs" used for specific project gates.
