I find it always to be a bit difficult, especially If you're self employed/have your own firm. Usually the best way to answer that question is "I'm a consultant". As a project management consultant/specialist probably a good answer would be "project management consultant, someone who is hired to ensure that projects are effectively executed, managed and completed within time and within budget. One of my long-time friends in the industry used to tell his close friends that he ran a bunch of houses of ill-repute. I asked him why, and he suggested he did not want them to know he was doing project work. When he asked why i was concerned, he said that 'many of our friends are involved here, and I wanted them to think I was doing something new and different.' My suggestion was that many of the project in which he was involved were very complex and interesting--much more so than many of the others, and he ought to be touting his expertise, and that of his teams, rather than hiding it.
Going to a more serious note, i love to tell the stories of how we solved problems through the teams, and use these stories even today with my students. We have an amazing story to tell ,and be proud to do it. Saving Changes...
