Management says networking is very important. But when you do that they were saying should not be close with people, really confused.

I think in this context it's referring to people in senior management, head quarters or head office. Regarding managers telling you it's important to network but not to be close with people, they may be referring to keeping an emotional and professional distance but close enough to be effective through networking.

Hi Pavithra, management is right because management is afraid of competition. Networking helps widen the horizons, increase the opportunities and make the employee less vulnerable and dependable to only one boss. It is a risk every single person must take to protect his own interests..

I can write a lot. While I disagree with some of the things that are outside there take a look to Lyz Linch book named "Smart Networking". I faced lot of training and coaching along the years about this topic that some organizations consider will give the organization the power "together we are more than one".

Hi Pavithra. I agree with Sante point, because the key is to balance all these relations, setting limits to them. I would only advise that this is not a general recipe: special planning should be done when dealing with teams located in different countries/cultures.

When you are networking, you are not making friends but rather acquaintances. The idea is that when you meet someone, you both have an existing network that you can now connect.

While networking is not necessarily easy, it is not arduous. It's a question of keeping in touch with people. The frequency will vary for each person in your network.
