When you’re preparing to interview for a project manager job, it’s important to know what types of questions you’re likely to get and how to respond to them. Whether you’re applying for a full-time position or pitching your services as an independent consultant, your answers to these questions will not only help determine whether you get the job but also your potential for success as a project manager.

Here are some of the questions, I've asked, and been asked, over the years, Andrey.

What is the biggest problem you've had on a project? How did you deal with it?

What kind of inter-personal relationship should you have with your team members?

A client shows up at your office asking to see the project sponsor. You know the project sponsor is off playing golf. What do you do?

I don't know that I've ever had a standard set of questions between companies, but common ones I've been asked are:

1. What are the dimensions of the largest or most complex project you've ever managed (e.g. duration, cost, peak resources)?

2. What was your biggest project failure, what did you learn, and how have you applied that knowledge on future projects?

3. Have you ever taken over a project in trouble from another PM and what's the first few actions you took?

What are the top three one's it is hard to say, as it depends on the company project business, but on top of the abovementioned great questions, I like to add the following for your preparation:

1. How to do you define leadership and what is your approach in projects?
2. How do you deal with conflicts?
3. What are from your perspective and experience the most important project success factors?
