Lately our management has been talking about implementing peer 360 reviews. What are they?

Dear Anonymous, a Peer 360 Review is a very comprehensive type of employee appraisal. It includes self ratings, peer review, and management assessments. It gives employees a chance to know how all aspects of their performance is perceived by others. This approach can also helps those employees that may have conflicts with their manager. Peer 360 Reviews generally have high employee involvement and credibility and provide employees with a good all-around perspective. Good luck. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

Isn't it comforting if you have an avenue to provide feedback on your boss? So, it's a 306 degree checks and balances system which ensures an optimal prganix=zational performance.

Regret that I didn't do a quick spell check on my previous posting! Please read the last sentence as "organizational performance".

360 Reviews we had them, we went through them - the results are based mostly on perceptions, the objective is to identify areas of strengths and weakness, whether it meets peer expectations and so on in order to provide further Leadership training and development.
In summary:
An electronic form is sent for you to complete and you must choose a minimum of 3 x staff you either managed or worked with and 3 x Managers of your choice - these people are notified to complete and rate you based upon a set of questions by simply selecting the answer that they think fits in with you. Also a self appraisal of yourself using same method by answering the questions is required.
The resultant report based on the questions you answered and the questions staff and management answered should provide you with an overall appraisal of you and areas where improvement is required and areas where expectations were met.

We found that the results were conflicting -
What tends to happen is this: the staff that you manage and rated you using the 360 Reviews conflict with the Management rating - we found that staff that work and interact on a frequent basis with you reflect far more realistically the real you and their responses and answers almost match with your own self appraisal answers. The Management rating in most cases is way out it is based purely on perception and there is a big gap between what the staff members rating is compared with the Management one that needs to be addressed.

360 Reviews can be useful however, what they dont do is factually measure ones real performance, personality, integrity, behaviour etc these are only based on a set of fixed questions; we know that appraisals could add value and the best ones are the ones held with your Line Manager throughout the year that provide ongoing feedback and aids improvement, learning and growth for all..

We no longer conduct 360 reviews.

A few years back our company started to do Peer 360 Reviews. It was trialed on a group and from my knowledge, that group doesn't do them anymore and it was not rolled out to the rest of the company.

I don't know why it was discontinued but my speculation is management did not know what to do with the data collected especially dealing with the negatives reviews.

It is one thing to collect data but what to do with the data collected is very important.

My previous two Companies used to perform Peer 360 Reviews. I think it was useful as evident from the Pay hikes and Promotions thereafter.

I think its more meaningful because, it will not be biased of one persons perception of your work or perfomance.

I would like to refer you to CCL - Creative enter of Leadership. They have a comprehensive 360 degree review system in place and they serve CEOs of Fortune 100 companies. The explanations provided about 360 reviews are sufficient to put you on right track.

The 360 is for the 360 degrees in a circle. In other words, you are evaluated by all people in your immediate surrounding. Usually it involves your immediate reports, your supervisors, your peers and, sometimes, your customers.

Each person has a different view of your performance. The idea is that together they paint a truer picture of your performance than only a subset of them.
