I most love being able to protect the average employee. For example, I can speak frankly with senior Managers about topics most employees wouldn’t dare broach, such as the justification behind Management’s decisions. In this way I can challenge the foolish politics and selfish ambition that sometimes underlie these decisions, and prevent employees from wasting their time performing useless tasks.

Amen, being in a position and tactfully saying "no" to the Sponsor or your CEO in defense of your project's success, both gives an adrenalin rush and the peace of mind of knowing "you did the right thing for the right reasons."

Two things and they both relate to people. #1 helping others (a. the Sponsor, b. my team achieve more together than apart and advancing their careers / skills, and c.converting negative stakeholders). #2 don't have to fire anyone (just tell their resource manager you don't expect to need them in the future!)
