Hi Michelle, currently I am a Director of Operations. It really depends on what industry you are in. Usually it requires you to have some knowledge or experience in the industry, aside from the general knowledge of the operations of the business. You will also need to have knowledge and/or experience across a number of departments within the business: sales, HR, finance etc. as these all come into play as operations manager. It's one of the few roles where you really need to be across the whole business, and know who is who, and what is what, etc.

It would be in a Call Center Setting. I have already worked for the company for over 5 years, currently working on my Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.

If you are looking at IT operations, you definitely want to look into ITIL from Axelos.

It is helpful for a project manager to have an understanding of operations as the operators for any project are often the client. Getting operations input to the front end planning of projects is crucial. To work in operations is all about understanding the process and looking for continual improvement in my view. You have to be someone who likes thinks to run smoothly and be 'silent running'.

ITIL would definitely benefit you in a call center setting. Check out the Axelos web site for the ITIL publications. You should also consider getting certified, at least Foundation level.

I will recommend you (as Stéphane) ITIL.
