To keep your PMI certification in good standing and ready for renewal, what steps do you take and which of them do you consider to be the most effective? Anything to avoid at all? Thank you! Saving Changes...
If you want least effort then as Peter said, free webinars are a good option. However as most of these are 1 hour in duration, you'd need 60 of them over a three year period to recertify.
I prefer a blended strategy:
1. Work as a practitioner - 5 PDUs per year for doing your job!
2. Read a few PM books - helps you stay current and you earn PDUs for the time you were reading those
3. Give back to the profession - volunteer for a Chapter, write some articles, give a presentation or two - multiple PDUs for each of those
4. Take a course or attend a conference - more costly but again, large number of PDUs

I fulfill most of my PDU's through webinars, with an additional mix of other types such as reading, giving back, or coursework.
Nothing really to avoid, except, of course, waiting until the last minute... Saving Changes...

First, you can explore the minimum and maximum PDUs requirements for each category. This information will help you to decide activities in earning PDUs. For example, You can choose to earn all sixty PDUs from any category of Education. And, there is no minimum PDU requirements for “Giving Back to Profession”, earning PDUs from them are optional.
