Query Regarding Some Project Terminology

Hello!

In the various books on project management I read to date, I have come across terms which are used in the very early stages of project conception, for instance, the "project requirements document", "project definition document", "statement of work", "project objective statement", "scope statement" and so forth.

My query: Are these terminology all synonymous? If not, what is their relationship? Where does a project feasibility study come in all this and under what circumstances would such a study be performed? With the exception of scope statement, I have not come across an explanation of these terms in the PMI Body of Knowledge 2004.

Thanks for any responses! I'm sorry for asking such a "basic question" but my research has not been able to answer this so far.

Hello Aurangzeb,

A project requirement document can contain sections that document the project objective and scope. By definition, objective is different than scope. The objective is what is the end goal of the project and what is the coresponding success criteria. Scope can be and usually is bigger than specific objectives.

A statement of work can be part of a project definition (though I confess, I've only ever seen them as seperate documents).

Your project definition, at least the ones I have seen are your overall project plan. That is, how are you going to manage the project, what is your risk management plan, communication management plan, change management plan, issue management plan, etc...

Does this make sense?
