Does anyone know how to create a WBS in excel, i saw a youtube video saying how to get the numbers, but can we translate that into the boxes?

Salvatore -

To clarify, are you referring just to the WBS ID (e.g. 1.2.3) or are you asking if Excel can actually generate a WBS chart based on the information being entered into a worksheet.

Salvatore, most likely you have to use VBA Coding. The below link with further link to a specific blog may give some guideance and help:

Kiron,
Yes, I was asking if we can generate a chart using the info being entered into the worksheet...As peter showed the link, I can see the outline of it, but is there a way to project the visual breakdown of it?

Additional suggestion: For WBS visualization in Excel use the function "SmartArt" and select hierarchy layouts" in Excel. Copy the WBS text structure in the format layout. Adjust the WBS visualization manually via the indent functionality.

Thanks, Andrey. That's quite convoluted and inflexible! I've done better WBS numbering formulas that, at least, allowed me to move rows and have the numbers change automatically.

That's the youtube video I was talking about, it doesn't show how they make the boxes!

That's right, Salvatore. All it does is create a WBS number that will sort correctly. The problem is you have to manually put each number of the WBS in separate cells.

I'm sure there is something out there that can make it much easier...Imagine having a rather large project that will take days to do all that manual work.

For those who have experience, do you like this excel method or is there a better tool? I would love to only have to type in the dictionary/outline and have it auto create the WBS hierarchy chart. Seems to minimize the amount of manual work, correct?
