Bottom-Up Estimating Technique is a method of estimating project duration or cost by aggregating the estimate of lower-level components of the work breakdown structures (WBS).

This technique been used as T&T in Estimate Activity Resource (Time Management Plan). My question is why been used on estimating activity resource and NOT been used to estimate activity duration? I feel the later is more appropriate to suit the definition of purpose of Bottom-Up Estimating Technique.

Appreciate kind clarification from our distinguished peers in PMP. Thank you in advance.

3 point and parametric estimating are a form of bottom up estimating, since they allow you to calculate or estimate at the lowest level of the WBS.

Thumbs up. Thank you for the reply.

Because duration estimations involves a lot more assumptions and constraints than effort estimations.

Also, while I might have multiple resources assigned to an activity and hence need to aggregate their individual effort estimates (a form of bottom-up estimating), a single activity will only have one planned/expected duration once you apply the various assumptions, constraints, resource calendars and so on.

Thank you for all the great piece of opinions. Appreciate that.

Following the rolling wave planning, we do estimate schedule durations as bottoms up for the scope which is well defined and ready for execution near future. Once we resource load the schedule, we always cross-check with hours and qtys in the estimate. they should always be aligned.
