An enhancement effort is a [generally minor] standalone project. A lot of the rejected scope creep or change request items in the initial release sit in the enhancement bucket.

There is no industry standard definition for these terms, as far as I have seen. When they come up in contracts, I always see some kind of definition included. The difference between maintenance and enhancement is particularly tricky. If a change is considered "absolutely essential" some might call it maintenance.
