Folks

Is there any rule of thumb (% of the total project cost) to account for resource attrition in a project ? If so can anyone share it and also can anyone mention briefly how do they account for resource attrition in their projects ?

Dear Keith, most organizations that we work with use risk management processes to mitigate resource attrition risk rather than uplifting or padding the schedule or cost baseline. There can be a number of factors that contribute to attrition risk and many of these can be mitigated with minimal or no impact to the project baseline. And if the collective risk events pose a likelihood (weighted average chance) of occuring, then a project contingency can be budgeted. I hope we hear from others on this. I suspect there are those that have and use a rule of thumb effectively. Cheers. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

Keith,

In technology, we use a 3% contengency. In the planning stages, we do not add the contengency into our baseline.

Dear Mark, I wanted to know is there any math behind 3% you have come with?

Actually, the yearly turnover rate at even the best companies is around 15%, and if you work at a consulting firm, the turnover rate is closer to 40% a year. So your turnover experience may vary by a factor of 2 and 1/2 depending on the company.
