You want to start a project management company in an environment that lacks a project management, and your company is focusing on social projects. I don't see the potential for your company to make a high profit return in this scenario, so I wonder if your company will be able to remain fiscally viable for long.
Hello Eric.
I meant. By 2015, there were about 16,000 of non-profit organizations and foundations in this country that work with Social Projects. However, their methodologies and techniques are not standardized. My thesis is focused on creation of a project consultant company to provide them with training, couching and leading following the PMI Standards. What do you think? Any recommendation?

I have teaching and helping this type of companies in the past like UN's Blue Helmets and others. What you like to do is about business administration. Project management has no impact on that, no matter at the end you will implement project management practices. Here is the situation to consider where you will impelement (not your consulting firm no matter it applies too). To be successful to implement project management practices into any type of organization you have to take into account: 1-organizations must be understand from the systemic point of view. 2-project management practices will be implemented as a solution to business problems. Those associations are business and to understand that you have to take into account the definition of business that is nothing to be with taking money or not (go for it. Find the "business vector" which is a mathematical structure to define a business). 3-because it is a matter of strategy you have to understand the organizational architecture first. You can use Tom Peter´s S Model to understand that. I wrote an article about that. It was published by the PMI and the IIBA as "best practice for practical business analysis". 4-organization life cycle and the point where the organization is located is a must.

Danny -

if organizational PM maturity is low, then a project management consultant is likely to spend a fair bit of time "selling" the value of project management to prospective clients and then helping them establish a foundational level of PM capability through training, coaching, and leading by example.

There are no global standards for PM consultants (or PMs for that matter). If a client wants to hire you, PMI or any other PM association won't prevent them from doing so even if you have not been certified. However, if you are a PMI member and/or hold a PMI credential, you are expected to adhere to PMI's Code of Ethics.

Hi Danny, Agreed with Kiron. I would say to start an enterprise in project management field is challenging for reason the Client must really appreciate the value added into their performing organisation. PM must have sense of business acumen in the industry.

Thank you.

Hello PUI. What would be your recommendation knowing that the study of this thesis is aimed to a Social PM Consulting company?

Danny, a social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being—this may include maximizing social impact alongside profits for external shareholders. In other word, the key driver to keep an social enterprise activity running is all about sustainability in the long run.

Giant organisation translated their effort in the form of CSR. I would rather suggest you look into the sustainability aspect of social enterprise (social PM consulting company) as your core focus in doing your master thesis which I think is valuable contribution to knowledge base & community.

Your suggests are well-received. I will focus my study in that direction. I have much work to do. I think that achieving sustainability for this company will be challenging to demonstrate.
Thank-you so much.

Danny: what you have selected belongs to business administration not to project management (both could be related). My piece of advaice is to take some of the project management problems like stakeholders administration, estimations, life cycles, and others that could be help you.

Thanks for your comment Kiron. I am considering to incorporate the OPM3 Standards as part of the deliverablse of my thesis. I am considering to create this company in the future after gaining more experience. This Project Consultant Company is aimed to Social Projects.
There are a new version of OPM in place. I am working in reviewing that. The OPM has no sense, it will not help you at all, unfortunatelly.

In establishing a PM consulting company you will have to develop a clear value proposition for the intended clients. PMI is an excellent framework for PMs to organize their knowledge but customers want to know how does what you do help me. You have to link the benefits of the project management to their needs. For example, by following proven techniques we will deliver your product on time within budget and to specifications. Saving you money and making you more.
Your small investment in good PM will pay you back x fold

Not all projects are profit driven, nor is the passion for project management. Perhaps Danny is more concerned about social projects that benefit a wider community, and that is totally fine. The dissertation you are doing could perhaps be about the intangible benefits of doing social projects that are not financially profitable, but may provide value well into the future and change lives. A project that comes to mind to me was a project to deliver fresh water to a provincial town in the Philippines. The cost/benefit analysis was not based on monetary profits, but by the value to the local community, as assessed by the local community, of having fresh running water to this particular town. Now to Eric's point, a "company" is normally about profit. The company could emerge itself in tenders from the government and other NGO's to deliver projects that provide both a profit to the company (although less than the big consultancy firms, in order to win the job), and provide a real benefit to the community. They call that a win/win in most circles.

You always needs money to run the business. No matter is a NGO or any other type of organization. Business is a word commonly related to money but it does not right when you see how to define the business where the organization will perform her activities. So, NGOs and other need to think how they will get the money to run their operations.
