I'm involved in a project to completely replace an AS-400 based accounting package supplemented by Excel spreadsheets to a fully automated integrated system. Has anyone used or know of a good accounting system evaluation package? Is there an evaluation template or methodology that can be suggested? My interest is in preparation for the system procurement. We hope to be able to develop a short list of potential vendors that fit our functional needs and price points in advance of issuing an RFP. Saving Changes...

Dear Matthew, most of the accounting software providers provide a free evaluation or demo system if that is what you meant by "evaluation package". Some that come to mind are: 1) Microsoft Great Plains - $50,000 to $250,000, 2) SAP Business One - $20,000+, 3) Made2Manage - $25,000 to $250,000, 4) Sage ACCPAC - $2,000 to $100,000, 5) Exact Software - $10,000 to $50,000, and many others. Attached is a high level template, an excel spreadsheet "Vendor Selection Spreadsheet" that might help with your shortlist. Good luck. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International Saving Changes...
Your high level evaluation spreadsheet is a good start. I was hoping that someone had an evaluation tool that could be use at a feature/function level. But, I your post was very helpful. Thanks Saving Changes...

Hi Matthew, yes, you are right. The evaluation spreadsheet is very high level. You might get an initial feature/function list from your users as sometimes the vendor provided feature/function list is more of a product oriented capabilities list verses business or user functions list. I am sure each of the vendors has their own version of an evaluation tool..! And the answer is...! As a side note, we too recently upgraded our accounting system. The features of all of the leading packages are very impressive and seem to just get better all of the time. Best of luck to you too. -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International Saving Changes...

Matthew, you might also consider the Best Software product line which has specific manufacturing specific modules that may help. I think MAS500 might be more in line with your requirements just by reading the postings. Saving Changes...
