Project+ Question

I see posts re: Project+ from 2002, but nothing new. I know the test has been updated. I'm an IT Project Manager. Wondering if Project+ is a worthwhile 1st certification on the road to a PMP, or should I just work towards the CAPM (not enough hours/experience for the PMP yet).
Does the Project+ certification carry any weight with employers or in the industry at large?

Hi Anon -

Personally, I look to the job boards and my friends to understand what employers are looking for. I haven't seen any job postings where they state Project + required or preferred. To be honest, I haven't seen any project manager positions where they have asked about CAPM either.. Perhaps this is something of a requirement for Project Coordinators?? Not sure. Mostly all I see for PM positions are Masters, 5-15 years experience (depending on position and company), and either PMP required or preferred.

Hope this helps

Dear Anonymous, I would say yes, absolutely. CompTIA is world renown for its role in advancing the IT industry. Independent subject matter experts work with CompTIA to develop certification exams that validate an individual's IT skill set. All of the CompTIA certifications carry weight with employers and are well worth having. I also agree with Ms Schoenick regarding the CAPM, PMP, and Masters. Good luck..! -- Mark Perry, VP of Customer Care, BOT International

I do agree with Bethany. It is now 2015 and I see very few job postings with Project + or CAPM requirements. I mostly see PMP.

PMP has been listed as one of the top certifications for IT for many years. I'd first consider your education, experience and training by downloading the PMP Handbook.

This will give you a good idea of the investment in your personal development required to attain your PMP as many others have mentioned here. COMPTIA, ITIL, EA etc are other certifications that your organization may pay for as on the job training.

Spend some time doing some research and documenting your action plan.

Good luck!
