I'm reading "reinventing organisations" (french) book and one of the topics adressed is how the organisation structure around self organized team and multi function team members can change project management.

I'm convince that PM work is about effiency of an organisation. In a perfect world, we don't need project manager to anticipate and follow activities.

then if we delegate to all the member of a team the needs to anticipate, plan, monitore and control (self organized), no more PM is necessary.
The team is responsible of its own objective (business, development, product, ressources, investment..) and a consolidation is made at an upper level.
All decisions are made by the different team and between the team.
Only coaching is provided by upper level organisation member.

What do you think ?
"Sun hydraulics", "AES", "BSO/origin", "buurtzorg", "morning star", "patagonia" and more have this kind of organisation and it seems to work.

The problem with the theory, Jonathan, is what do you do when you have a project that requires a team? Do you pull it together from existing teams? Do you build it from scratch?

Stéphane, that is one of the several question when I was reading the book. How to organize when a new project appears. But I can foresee that team could build itself or recruit new members internally or externally. It a question of "freedom to operate" within an organization. It is impossible if the company doesn't have the right mindset.
Another point I was questionning is the capacity to plan things. It was the same debate in my head when I start to learn about scrum. How can we create a schedule when no one know what to do, and how to do it?
but today it is working so why not ?
if we can increase the efficiency of the organization .....

When I studied my doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University we worked in a model named TPS that was created with basement on a model close you describe above. That model was taken for lot of agile based methods and lean based methods as a model to work with people. It was taken for leadership methods too. Today, some people are still debating about things like self organized teams and this type of things. When some kind of participation is requested to myself I always sustain the same: to understand people mainly when they are a group the only thing you have to understand is how things happen into the nature and you have the answers. Think about groups dynamics from bugs to animals and people. Think about the process to do things, to take decisions, etc on those groups. What it is amazing the ability to write book and to transform this books into best sellers that some people have.
