My first question is can we compare PMP with Prince2 ? If yes, what is the difference ?
Is it worth to do Prince2 certification ?

Very informative answers by everybody. Interesting to note that the question was originally asked in 2005 and has ever since become more relevant.

I have been involved with some IT projects but have never used a particular methodology. Now I want to learn more and my question is that which one should I study first, PMP or Prince2? I am getting a chance for Prince 2 training at a discounted price but wanted to know if it would be fine to go study and do PMP/PMBOK later on?

Thanks.

This is a question that has come up in many Project Management minor debates. I usually tell people PMP is more recognised project management qualification. Almost all PM jobs now ask about this as opposed to Prince2. However I have to agree with the other experts on the fact that Prince2 enables you with the ability to demonstrate specific methodology whereas PMP is more general. Both do however work in most cases. it really boils down to the following points:-

• Both are project management methodologies used to run a project efficiently.

• PMP is accredited by PMI institute where as PRINCE2 is accredited by APM group.

• PMP is recognised all over the world whilst PRINCE2 is vastly recognised in Europe region.

• Both will give an insight into how to run project successfully, so both accredations are at par with each other.

I've done both, and as many have said - PMP is a collection of best practices, a framework in which a PM or company can cherry pick the most applicable techniques/methods and construct their own methodology. It covers in some detail items like various scheduling techniques, risk management, contractual and ethical areas etc.

Prince2 is strictly a prescriptive methodology. It assumes various PM skills as a given and outlines a governance process in order to deliver a project.

Personally speaking, I found PMP a far more useful qualification due to the range of areas covered and the starting point for delving into pure project management techniques. Prince2 would be applicable more if you are looking for a PM job in the UK or for a company that utilised the Prince2 methods, but it is very much a different beast and I am not entirely convinced that Prince2 training will make anyone a better 'project manager' in the same way that the PMI/PMP training does.

I was searching for the results of "PMP vs PRINCE2", I found this thread highly intense in sharing their views and was helpful in getting the clarity in me to pursue PMP which I intended to do earlier.
I would like to thanks each and every contributor for his contribution that would have helped young managers like me.
