I am curious how you came to this work...did you study project management and then become a PM or did you find yourself doing this work and then pursued it as a profession? I'd love to hear your story!

As an undergrad, I joined an organization that sponsored campus activities, so I fell into project management early on. I have been doing it as past of my work in schools and in the classroom. Then in a more formalized fashion managing contracts. My team leader suggested that I go for the PMP and like others who have commented here, love learning and thinking about how to incorporate PMP principles every day.

In the mid-80s, I had been an Operational manager in an insurance company home office for several years when my boss had a vision that we needed a different sort of team / business unit to address significant changes in our processes and use of technology. I was the initial 'team' member and performed analyst tasks and contributed to longer term planning. Soon, we started pulling in other persons with specific expertise, including another peer manager, and we had the makings of a PMO, though we didn't have that term - we were the "Project Team". So, it was quite accidental that I became a PM and led our "PMO", but the chance to build something new was very appealing and gratifying. After several years I returned to the traditional operational management track before joining a software vendor as a PM, and have continued in the "PM" world for nearly 20 years. I still benefit from the general management experience and perspective, but I am a PM now.
