Should a PMP certified project manager be able to successfully function across all industries? Or will their success depend on the specific industry they are in?

I think a good PMP can manage successful projects in any industry. As long as you apply the knowledge, skills, tools and techniques and properly manage the resource allocation. Subject matter experts (expert judgement as a tool and technique) can do the industry specific details of the project whilst the PMP concentrates on managing the project itself. The tendency of linking a PMP to a specific area because they are well knowledgeable in that field is closely linked to the 'helo effect' and should be avoided.

In short, I think a PMP certified project manager must be able to successfully function across all industries

Some jobs looking for PM's do require relevant industry experience, so it's a fallacy to think industry experience doesn't factor into the success of a project. When comparing apples with apples, if two PM's have the exact same experience, qualifications and certifications, industry exposure will make that PM more successful in that industry. But I agree that industry is not in the top 5 important variables for a successful project.

I also agree with Vincent and several others. Success of PMP should not be bound by what industry you are working in but by how well you apply the underlying principals and ideals.
Some industries are harder to convince of this than others and they will want to see some technical competence as well as PMP certification. I am not saying that I agree with this stance, only that it does exist in some industries.

In my opinion, beyond the technical certifications you may have, adaptability is what make you succeed in whatever endeavor you are part of, so be prepare to put your knowledge, but also your passion in all what you do.

Industry does not matter but relevant experience in a specific industry clubbed with applicability of knowledge gain through PMP would definitely help in successfully completing the projects on time, with in the budget and with expected quality.

I agree with those who have posted that the framework is industry independent. Specifically, as a project manager you should not attempt, or be expected, to be the subject matter expert. You are the project manager. If the framework is followed, you will have no trouble in any field because the plan will have had appropriate input from required experts.
