I'm putting together a questionnaire to be passed into the EVP's, to gather information and opinions about the quality of service provided by the PMO office, it's processes, processes understanding and execution and a general feedback. Can you guys help me with some questions for it. Think as if you were an EVP what kind of questions do you spect?

JT, congrats on taking the initiative, time, and effort to get QoS feedback from your EVPs! We see many PMOs structure such a survey into two main areas - customer satisfaction and process improvement. The first area being focused on how well the PMO supported the EVPs (the business) in terms of the core expectations and performance measurements for the PMO. This part of the questionaire is typically multiple choice and somewhat easy to scorecard. The second area of the survey being more open ended and focused on EVP process improvement and defect elimination suggestions for the PMO spanning such topical areas as tools, processes, cycle time, etc. As a reality check, it can also be helpful and enlightening for the PMO to assess itself in the eyes of the EVPs prior to sending the survey out and then comparing the data points. If the PMO self assessment is significantly different than the EVP feedback, it would be helpful and important for the PMO to understand and address the gaps. We are working on defining what a PM Center of Excellence is? We think it's different than a PMO. We are thinking that we should look to develop and train, become a mentoring center as well as resource for the best practices. We aren't looking to govern. Are there other groups doing something similar?

Dear Tina, companies of all sizes are increasingly coming to realize that the skills and techniques amassed via managing projects represent leverageable knowledge and intellectual property of the organization. Companies are establishing Project Management Centers of Excellence (PMCoE) to faciliate the sharing and institutionalization of project management best practices in very much the same manner and approach that you are doing. The following link to the PMI ISSIG provides a very nice 45 minute archived webinar presentation.

Building Project Management Centers of Excellence: Guidelines For Development

Great post and good luck! I hope we hear and learn from others on this subject.
