The VP of the Project Management Department asks you - Project Manager - to draw a mind map depicting where do you see yourself in the next five years. The natural " up the ladder" position would be Program Manager, but this has not to always be the only path upwards.
Could people share their experiences about the evolution of roles (or areas) as a project manager? Or how have you managed to push your career forward as a PM practitioner? Saving Changes...
"Retire" might not be a good answer. In addition to Kiron's list, some roles could involve business transformation, agile adoption (if not done already), and oh why the heck not, sitting at the C-level or executive level involved in some initial project inceptions before it hits the PMO. I agree with the post above, I think this definitely requires some self evaluation. However if you are asking what the ladder of natural progression is then it is also highly dependent on the organization. For example organizations with a strong project management backbone would have a Sr. PM leading other PMs. I have seen people who landed in PM roles from BA and eventually worked up to Director of PMO. I have yet to meet someone who has maneuvered into an executive position from a PM role. Not saying it is impossible. For me? Personally, I want to be in a senior leadership position after getting my MBA. Saving Changes...

I started off as a Technical Writer, then became a Business Analyst, and currently I'm a Project Manager. My next step will be PMO Director, and hopefully I'll be able to find a position soon. Saving Changes...

There are other ways to move "up" as a project manager.
1. Manage larger projects
2. Manage projects in a different industry
3. Manage strategic projects
These are all ways of growing as a project manager. Saving Changes...
