As a consultant, I've worked at clients that use both. Some like a crisp description and some (usually "secret" projects) use code names. The code names are often for projects related to acquiring or divesting of a company or business unit. For code names, I worked for one company which used Greek/Roman gods (Athena, Jupiter etc) and another company which used alphabetical code names.

Love the greek/roman gods for naming things, like the planets.

The data administrator in me says that codes are just surrogate ways of identifying an object, in this case project. Codes are workarounds to make it easier for integration with various sytems.
