What do you think ? How much communication methods are important for a successful Project and should we not upgrade ourselves and use Social media Platforms also as a method to communicate better with team as well as stakeholders both to get more clarity on Project updates and key concern areas. I believe that Social Media can be used to keep better engagement and interaction within team .

Communication is very important, thought, the communication tools can play a key role. However, the project atmosphere as well as organizational environment should be considered. There is no limitation on the use of social media in the project, however, other issues and factors should be take into account.

I think the use of chat, blogs, Wiki's, etc could enhance project communication BUT we need to be careful that the more 'social' like the communication, the less likely it will be read. If we need action to be taken or confidential information to be communicated we need to use more traditional means. A good communication plan should be developed and understood by all stakeholders/teams/team-members so everyone communicates in like manner. An obvious example of problematic communication is txt messaging a high level stake holder that the project will be late.

I believe that using social media such as chats to keep stakeholders engaged on status and progress or updates is a good means. But when it relates to more action items, traditional methods should be used such as formal letters reports etc. This would have already been recorded in the communications management plan as to the method and frequency of using such communication tools.

The important thing is to clear understand what is communication and which is the communication process. After that, you can talk about communication as a whole. My recommendation is take a look to Shannon´s Information Theory.

Social media platforms should be moderated through policies in any project management plan, otherwise you run the risk of them getting out of hand and people communicating for communications sake.

Irfat -

Remember that the most effective communication is face-to-face and I've yet to find a social media platform that can replace this.

I would echo Sante's advice to ensure that ground rules are established on the use of any social media or collaboration tools and that everyone gets a basic level of training in their usage otherwise you risk inappropriate usage and/or ineffecient usage.

Thank you for the responses . Yes , its necessary to build a ecosystem around use of Social Media in Project Management Communication and seeing the time spent by a Project Manager on Communication and most of the time for non value added communication , we must look in to the processes to cut down that time which can be utilised then in more value added activities. For this there should be a clear cut guidelines on what will be communicated on social media and what through more formal communication channels to avoid the misuse of information. We can debate and discuss further but i strongly believe that we must explore the merits of communication through Social Media before looking more in to demerits of the same.

Suggest firstly to analyse the communication requirements and then to select the best tool(s) for each type of communication.

Social media are excellent for informal communication and collaboration within teams, using tools freely available and accessible (e.g. WhatsApp groups).

But beware of information security risks.
