Social media might have a place in your communication plan. Don't forget that the choice of communication type should not be based on only the stakeholder's preference. The content of the communication should aslo influence the communication type used.

Taking the line of @Stéphane something people missing when using social media is when they use it they belongs to "The Matrix". I mean, how many of us when decide that email is a valid communication mean for our project take into account if people have been trained in the use of email? The same with any other Social Media. I am not saying people must not use it into projects. In fact, I am leading a program about that in the company where I am actually working. Perhaps because I have to use things like emails when all started to be used as a mean of communication I learn about the impact to not train people first. All these stuff multiplies the impacts when you work with highly distributed teams belonging to more than 65 countries around the world with people that belongs to different cultures.
