I am with banking domain working with an internation bank. I have managed projects of all sizes. I also get myself updated on the technology regularly and involve myself in solving technical issues too. I am now caught between the Project Management and application ownership. Which is best for the career? Administrative part of the project or technical part? Can someone throw some light on this please

Dear Anonymous,

Regarding which is best for the career, admin or technical part of project management? You might first consider what is it that you aspire to be, like to do, and have a passion for. Then, what is the business need for your aspiration in terms of the fit between what you are passionate about and the ability to pursue your passion to the satisfaction of your lifestyle requirements and personal needs. Some people are passionate about the technical part, others don't have the same appetite for it. Likewise, some folks are really good at the administrative, planning, and control side while others would rather be doing something else.

Regarding which is best for the career? There is and like will always be tremendous demand and career opportunity for those that have either skill and even more demand for those that have both.

It is not so much an issue of which is best, rather which is best for you. On a side note, I recently caught up with a friend and colleague who has had a career of over 25 years in IT. Though he has been successful in every endeavor spnaning application development, IT management, project management, etc., he stepped away from his work to pursue his passion of writing novels and has become a full time writer having written four novels already. He is happier than ever and only regrets that he didn't pursue his passion long ago.

Good luck to you as well. Cheers..!

Interesting anecdote there. Yes, it's upto oneself to decide. You might want to weigh the financial/tangible and other intangible pros and cons of either profession before reaching a decision.
