Jaleel . PMP, Associate Director| MetricStream Bangalore, India
Irrespective of project involving emerging technologies or not, proven or not, continuous monitoring and evaluation is required since it is not only a way of assessing but helps in going by a systematic approach towards the end goals. Also it looks at both the current situation and impact on the future.

Risk management is iterative process, PM is always on a watch out. Risk identified and registered in Risk register require continuous monitoring as more information about them is available their probability and impact may be changed, A low impact risk, may change its risk score/rating. Same goes for emerging technologies. Continuous motoring and evaluation is necessary.

the frequency of specific monitoring or control activities might be greater when delivering a project possessing higher levels of uncertainty, but even the simplest, lowest complexity project will still require periodic evaluation to ensure performance is within the approved constraints.

Should higher risks be monitored more often than lower risks? Absolutely.

There is a great disparity between what PMS SHOULD do and what actually PMs do! Based on the last couple years of project reviews. PM reviews or ensuring reviews of risks surrounding emerging technologies can best be described as a checklist mentality. They used checklists that have been developed in the past and those practices are NOT enhanced or modified to specifically address the emerging technology. That is reality today!

Sometimes it's just case of being misaligned for the purpose rather than not being enhanced. Indeed they need to be tailored for the specific purpose.
