How to prepare for PMP Certification?

Hi,

I am planning to get certified in 1-2 years. Not sure which org. maybe PMI, or Australian equivalent.

Since these orgs require an applicant to have industry PM experience, I want to ask at this stage, what documents should I be collecting to prepare for my application?

I might need to actively fill the gaps in my current experience. Do I need employment certification that I did Risk Management, Scope Management, etc.?

I have a few friends that prepared doing the Pmpsimple course. They told me it's amazing.

You have some other options, but even being less expensive pmpsimple from what I know is the best.

I agree with Andrew Makar and prior comments. While I am sure the bootcamps are good, we advise students to take 2-4 months of concentrated study to not only pass the PMP exam, but also to absorb the material. Any more time tends to drag it out too much, but a few days time would tend to reduce long term absorption of the material. Another aspect that people often miss is the idea that when you learn over time, you have the time to allow the material to "marinate" in your mind, which in part happens as a result of applying new ideas, either consciously on the job or even subconsiously.

If you would like, we have developed a free 200 question practice exam. Use it to see where you stand or as a final prep before the actual exam.

Vince A., It's been 10 years, have you gotten you PMP yet?

For anyone else that wants to get their PMP..

This is what I suggest in order to become a PMP:

- Education Requirements ( Theoretical knowledge)
- Experience requirements ( Practical use of knowledge)
- Reporting (in 500 characters or less, describe what you did.)
- Studying - Comprehending the PMBOK and how to apply.
- Focus - Focus on Knowledge areas, you may not be comfortable with yet.
- Class - I find boot camp courses are helpful to find areas of weakness.
- Arrange - arrange for studying time.
- Plan - Plan a strategy for studying and test taking.
- Practice - Get practice exams/questions/ assignments to deal with similar types of questions.
- Organization - Setup an exam date, get organized to take it
- Confidence - it's not a good idea to go into an exam not confident.

My Approach
Go through PMBOK once
Read RITA once and then again read PMBOK
you will feel you are ready for the exams
just before appearing for the exams skim through RITA
thats more than enough
If you could find time then try to attempt online mock tests as much as possible

Great thread. A lot of useful comments. I also recently passed my PMP exam. It is no small task, for a professional workign full time. But it is achievable, and it was beneficial to me. My journey studying for the exam inspired me to write a blog about the experience. I hope it’s useful to those currently seeking the certification. You can check out my perspective, advice, on my blog at www.thepreparedpm.com.
