There are many ways a project can be "in trouble"; it can be late, over budget, or both. The actions you take will depend on what the situation is. If you provide more specifics, I can give you some options that may help.

Dear Anonymous,

Regarding what should a PM do when s/he sees that EVA reflects the project is in trouble... I agree with the reply to your post by anonymous. The answer, of course, depends on the situation and specifics. Ideally, the PM would have planned for risks during the project planning process or phase. Not all risks can be anticipated, but many risks can and a Risk Plan can be a very effective tool in mitigating risks. Once the PM sees that the project is in trouble, there are a number of actions that might be a good idea to take such as:

  • Critical Path Analysis (what options do you have)

  • Risk Mitigation (what is your best or recommended course if action)

  • Communications (quickly address the problem before it gets larger and more difficult to resolve)

  • Project Schedule/Budget Update and Change Request (if it comes to that)

One would need to know the details to elaborate further. Great post. I hope we hear and learn from others, especially those EVA/EVM experts out there!
