Can somebody help me to define a Project Management Policy for my company? What should be the content in such a policy? I did some research in this, but in most cases the perspective of one may not be that of the other. As one define a policy it should be generic and it should not stick to any project Mgmt techniq or tool as the PM should be given enough freedom to choose his own strategy but with a defined standard. Here's the basis of a policy I wrote a couple of years ago.
Purpose -
This policy is provided to help ensure that portfolios, programmes, projects and sub-projects are conducted in a disciplined, well managed and consistent manner that promotes the delivery of quality results that meet the strategies and goals of the Organisation.
For brevity this policy uses the term project management as inclusive of the management of portfolios and programmes.
Scope -
This policy applies to all Organisation members, full and part-time, including consultants, contractors, secondees and agency staff.
Policy Statement -
It is the policy of the Organisation that projects:
1. Have well defined objectives within an accountability framework;
2. Be approved in accordance with approval requirements;
3. Employ sound project management principles;
4. Be adequately resourced;
5. Have a comprehensive and coordinated definition of the overall scope of the project; and
6. Be managed in a manner sensitive to risk, complexity and economy of resources.
I hope this helps
