Does PMP also apply to automotive industry? What is it?

I have heard about the PMP certification and assume it is well known in the IT world. However, within the automotive industry this certification could distinguish the program managers from the project engineers that are doing their best but not always making the grade.

Where do I learn more about this certification? What does it take to become certified?

Thanks in advance for your responses

PMI Certification is not industry specific and is intended to be used by the automotive industry. They are currently developing 'add-on' certifications, and the one for the Automotive Product Development is the first to be completed.

There's more info on the certification page of the national PMI web site:

www.pmi.org/certification

Look for the box labeled Certificate of Added Value (or similar...). Good luck!

PM is critical to the Automotive Industry. The fact that hardware design and WIP are involved only adds new dimensions to the process. Safety takes on a new role as well.

As someone who has consulted on automotive projects and programs I have found that Project Management methodologies, processes and tools have great potential to improve through-put, quality and profit. However most of the professionals directly involved with automotive program/project management are not PMPs. In fact, many have never attended a PMI meeting.

At GM there seems to be a growing interest by management to promote the PMP designation, however I doubt that GM is willing to pay an employee or (most likely a contractor) what the designation is presently worth.

I say presently because I have observed with interest how the PMP designation has gained acceptance in the corporate world. My own experience is that a certification may confirm competency, but project managers and effective team members are far beyond competent. To call us competent would be an insult.
