We all have used the process stakeholder management/stakeholder analysis/stakeholder engagement. My experience dictates the need for stakeholder "relationship" which goes beyond engaging, analyzing. Before you can successfully "manage" your stakeholders, you really need to establish relationship with them. Would love to have you share your thoughts on this topic Saving Changes...
It's ideal if a relationship exists with a given stakeholder group in advance of a project, but in many cases, the first interaction with the stakeholder occurs after they've been identified & initial analysis has occurred.
Whether it is with close stakeholders like your team members and sponsor or external (to the project) key stakeholders, it is always a good idea to develop a positive working relationship with them.

Thank you for your input. I agree with your response where we do need to analyze and engage and the sooner we do, the better. I have learned from my experience that as PMs this step may be done simply as one of the key steps vs. a genuine need to get to know your stakeholders, their needs, mentality, nature, communication style etc.....truly knowing who is that person? if not, chances are you will hit a roadblock at a critical point in your project. Again, thank you and looking forward to more such discussions.

Project Stakeholder Management includes the plan to manage the relation with the stakeholder based on what you elicit about the stakeholder. Any other type of relation has no sense mainly because project stakeholders could be an organization as a whole for example (while I could agree that you will be in touch with people inside that organization). Sometimes stakeholder "management" and "engagement" are mixed up. Certainly before you can get a foot in the door, you need to engage with stakeholders. Management of same comes once there is fair level of stability. This occurs once you have engaged and commanded their attention through effective communication, keen influencing and negotiation skills, and a decent understanding of human nature.

So far I understood, stakeholder identification and management is critical for the success of a PM. The stakeholder management include identification, planning, managing and controlling processes that might be customised based on your experience and understanding. But establishing relationship may not always be helpful and even can create conflict situation.

Well said. by relationship, I mean is that genuinely knowing your stakeholder. Their communication style, their management style, their willingness to spare their resources should there be a need, their workload and more....vs. only focusing on limited aspects. The more you proactively understand how they like to handle the situations, the easier it will be when you need them. Its like winning their confidence in you right from the early state to then remove any scope of possible resistance from them later in the game
There is a fine line between an sgressive and passive business relationships. This mirrors many aspects of personal relationships in that if we are too passive, the person we engage with loses interest, and if we are too aggressive, we turn them away. You need to be just right, just like in the goldilocks story. Saving Changes...

In my point of view ultimate purpose and objective of stakeholder management is to establish relationship, confidence and trust. Once developed then managing and controlling would be easy and best outcome can be achieved

I believe the better my relationship with my stakeholders, the easier it is to work with them. I prefer to schedule time before or shortly after project kickoff to meet with stakeholders individually and ask them about their needs. They appreciate this personalized gesture, and I can often get a fuller sense of their requirements than I’d otherwise gain in meetings.
