Bus Analyst vs Project Mgr

Hello all-

For the last 4 years, I've worked as an programmer/analyst at a large government transportation agency (state level). In that time, I've been tasked with upgrading and developing several applications, as well as implementing some off the shelf apps, too. I'm currently on a project team for a multi-year implementation of SAP. In all of the projects I've undertaken, with the exception of one, I've never been officially "called" the PM (project lead, technical lead, etc have all been terms bandied about). I'm in the process of documenting my experience for PMP, and I will also be enrolling in Villanova's Online Master's Certificate Program in IT Project Mgmt this fall. My question is this: Having run these projects, albeit with small teams, and doing coding, testing, documentation, etc myself in many cases, is this the kind/type of experience PMI looks for? Any thoughts from those with similar backgrounds are certainly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I was extremely interested by your post as I had the same questions and like you I wanted to "formalize" my experience with a proper certification. I have had like you for the past 5 years been given titles varying from Business Analyst to every type of lead (test, process, UAT,training etc...)I have last year done a 5 day intensive project management course by PMI (through my company) and I noticed that I actually had all the required experience of any aspect of project management but was lacking the essential tools of a project manager to bring it all together (stuff like how to "calculate" a critical path, assess resources and costs, etc...). You have all the experience I believe that PMI requires - they will provide you the tools to put it all together to be officially "called" Project Manager. Good luck ! :-)
