Mercury Loadrunner // Open Source Alternative?

Is there anyone who is familiar with Mercury Loadrunner? We were "dictated" that we use Loadrunner. I am looking for open source alternatives and I am a little confused as to whether it is possible for Loadrunner to monitor a Solaris box. Can anyone help?
