ERP/PM Integration

I’m looking for feedback on PM for what could easily turn into an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Operations nightmare. One such project in Qatar peaked at nearly 900 folks on site, had 2 million commissioning checks and over 15,000 commissioning and start up activities. If I’m successful, there’ll be numerous such projects at various stages of development globally though they’ll be 90%+ identical. The givens are SAP for ERP, Intergraph for CAD/Operations, ESRI for GIS. The question arises in the area of PM. I like what I read about MS Project Server 2006, its integration with portals and with Microsoft’s underlying workflow engine. I like their collaboration and communications services. But despite Microsoft’s claims about Project Server being “heavily used in Oil&Gas” and by the Northrupp Grumman joint strike fighter development project, I’m not convinced it’s up to the task. On the other hand, I’ve heard that Primavera is really challenged when it comes to integrating with other applications. As much as possible I want to automate the business processes using Microsoft’s workflow engine and .NET 3.0 and I want to build in as much self-auditing and reporting functionality as I can. Microsoft and SAP seem to be coming together very nicely. Still there’s the concern about Project Server’s capabilities. Comments?

Is your organization using Project Systems at all (or will be using). Supposedly, MS Project AND Primavera have pretty tight integration with this module. My organization is currently implementing PS, and we are a large transportation area, doing heavy highway. Also, I'm curious as to any tools you are using in conjunction with SAP,etc to manage your construction documentation. Good luck!

I have become a fan of Primavera (P6) and the company I work for has given me the opportunity to use Primavera in the Energy sector to build a plant, used Primavera in conjuction with SAP to perform a Turnaround or what many people call a planned shutdown (for repairs and maintenance.)

I find that having the right people with the right tools will benefit the situation. So you may consider researching Primavera partners that are formerly known as "Premier technology partners" or now I think they are called " Platinum Specialized certification."

I was delighted to see this when I googled looking for: "oracle primavera platinum status"

As you can see these companies develop thier in-house technologies because many of thier clients typical use Primavera in conjunction with another software system such as JD Edwards, SAP, CASP, IBM Maximo, Artemis, Passport, IMMpower, and many others.

Under the Integration tab at www.emerald-associates.com, you can see some examples. If you do not see what you need, I'm pretty sure they can advise you in the direction where it can be integrated.

Benit.

Rick, it has been since your initial post. Microsoft has a new version of Project Server. And, Primavera has been purchased by Oracle. It would be very intersting to know and learn from your experiences. Can you give us an update and share with us any insights and lessons learned..?

Hi Rick, Have you considered using SAP Workflow? SAP provides several standard workflows, to automate business processes, which are tightly integrated within SAP, and withstand SAP upgrades over time. If you'd like more information just let me know. Thanks.
