To increase chances of finding a job, many include on resume that they are PMP certified.

My questions:

Q1)
Is it really true that most employers don't check whether the certifications are valid?

Q2)
I have 3 MS degrees (on MBA), why doesn't the employer who interviews me check my background to verify that my degrees are attained by me? Is it because education and certifications are just to get to the interview stage even if the person who claims to have them doesn't really have them? In other words, nobody checks validity ..It's just for getting to the interview.

Thanks

Dear Fred,

Regarding is it really true that most employers don't check whether the certifications are valid and why doesn't the employer who interviews me check my background to verify that my degrees are attained by me... Most employers interview several candidates for a position and expect an applicant's resume to be factual and accurate. Few employers check the validity of resumes and credentials as part of screening applicants for an interview. Usually, verifying the applicant's resume and credentials are done after interviewing candidates, checking references, making an applicant selection, etc, and as part of the hiring process. In fact, many employers, when hiring, make the job offer subject to a background check and verification of the resume and creditials. Cheers.

In addition to Mark's comments, it is easy to check PMP certification, just go to the PMI site, click on Professional Development at the top of page, then click on Certification. Next, click on Registry on the left side of the page, type in the candidate's last name and you'll get a listing of folks with that last name that have PMP certification. So, with 1st and last name and location (city and state) you can verify PMP cert. Try my name if you want to practice, I'm listed as a PMP in Phoenix, AZ. You can also call PMI and ask if the PMI member is certified, but you'll need membership # b/c that's the way PMP certs are tracked. For college degrees, you can contact the school with name and SSN to verify. Most employers just verify the highest degree earned.
