Has anyone recently received a suspected spearfishing email? For the past couple of months there has been a large number of spammers joining this sites, and in recent days, a steep increase. Mostly, they advertise odd products and services, but may have a more larger intention.
Yesterday, I received an email from "Canada Revenue Agency" advising that, after a review of my tax return, I have a $400 refund. All I need to do is click on the link, provide my Visa number and the refund will be applied to my credit card.
I work in the IT department of Canada Revenue Agency, and have had previous positions in Collections, Audit and Appeals. We do not contact people by email advising of refunds, and ask for a credit card number to apply refunds. Nor Amazon or iTunes pre-paid cards...
More funny, I received the email at my CRA work email address. I don't share it widely, but did use it to sign up on this site. This makes me wonder if the spammers were looking for email addresses of our members.
Many of us work for companies, agencies and governments that deal with sensitive information. Spearfishing is a proven method to gain illicit, illegal access to that information. Saving Changes...
I hope you are referring to Spear Phishing (Spearfishing).
I almost received 5 such type of emails per month (not from Canada Revenue Agency), & they by default moved to junk. Best option to mark them as phishing & block the sender. Saving Changes...
