PMBOK 6th Edition - Friendly or Passive?

linkedin twitter facebook   Benefits Realization   Organizational Project Management
After going through PMBOK 6th Edition, I am very impressed with the 'reality' factor it adds. It makes more sense and is friendly to ready and digest.

Have you reviewed the book, what is your take on it?

So far I have not spend much time on the new PMBOK6.

The reason is simple, I can't HIGHLIGHT. An electronic copy of a reference document is something I put HIGHLIGHT and comments. So have an efficient search.

Not possible on the last PMBOK, so for now I keep version 5. The basic of PMBOK is the same!!! yes a few changes for good or bad.

The worst change from my point of view it is lock.

I am in the process of preparing a presentation about what are the changes in PMBOK6 compared to version 5. I'm still reading it. So far what Iiked is the fact that business analysis is included. According to previous editions, a project manager will receive "an order" to do something. Now, he/she needs to understand clearly what is the final product, why is needed and what are the expected benefits. When I finish all the reading to prepare my presentation, I will have a more solid opinion.

Michael -

I did a webinar a couple of months back contrasting the two editions - while the addition of tailoring considerations, emerging trends, agile/adaptive considerations and the increased content on the PM role are all steps in the right direction, the size increase of the document (700+ vs. 500+ pages) and the growth in the ITTOs makes it a little overwhelming, especially for someone who might not have read earlier editions.

This growth also is likely to further the incorrect perception that it is intended to be a "one stop shopping" for project management as opposed to being one reference among many.

This was very informative as I intend to delve into 6th edition.

Been examined on both PMBOK5 and 6, it is very evident that PMI intends to bring project management practices very close to daily lives.
Some of the changes have been long overdue and of course PMBOK6 can not afford to be less friendly than 5.
Structure and Content both makes it more friendly.

Let me give my perspective as someone fairly new to PM and the PMBOK guide. I studied 5th from Oct. 2017 and understood and passed exam in Mar. 2018. Out of mere curiosity, I obtained 6th edition and started to read on 1st May, and I noticed straight up that it's more refined and defined, better illustrated, more practical...a newbie would understand more easily. I find 6th edition to be simply awesome and I'm not even skipping sections that I know, just to absorb how wonderfully refined it is, and also so that I can more efficiently assist any other newbie to PM.

We need to adapt to changes, since it is required by the profession. I do not wana say that all the changes are necessary , however, this is the way that PMI decided to work and update the PMBOK. We better to trust them at least now
