How powerful is the(CVP) Cost-volume-profit analysis and contribution margin to evaluate the business case of a project

Perhaps it's because of the industries I've worked in but I never had to use CVP. The ones I see repeatedly used is profit & losses and cash flow analysis. Sometimes ROI and payback period is used for business cases.
