Has anyone implemented a PPM Software as a Service application? And what were the key reasons or benefits that resulted in selected a PPM SaaS solution over a traditional in-house installed application?

Anonymous, for a very good overview that you can listen to check out "The PMO Podcast Episode #20 - PPM Software as a Service" at www.thepmopodcast.com. Interviewed is Christian Smith, VP of Sales and Marketing of eProject. Christian speaks at length about PPM - Software as a Service. Also, the following eProject website page provides further information on PPM Software as a Service, http://www.eproject.com/products/software_as_a_service.htm. Regards, Anne.

We are evaluating tools now and hope to implement something by end of year for about 50 users. Our key requirement was resource management and visibility into current assignments and future resource availability. The two tools that we have narrowed down to are Tenrox and Daptiv.

Hello. In an effort of making full disclosure, I am the manager of business development and consulting for VCSonline, a company that delivers PPM software solutions. I was recently interviewed on the "The PMO Podcast" which you can access from their website at www.thepmopodcast.com or through iTunes. It is Episode #121 - PPM Software as a Service. Here is a direct link: http://www.botinternational.com/thepmopodcast_121.htm. The focus of this podcast is on the emergence of SaaS and the advantages to SaaS as a delivery model over a traditional local implementation. The advantages are many and I would be happy to discuss them with you.

You can also read a white paper co-authored with two of our clients that discusses how a SaaS solution met their organization's complex PPM requirements and budget. This was published by the Corporate Portfolio Management Association and can be accessed online at: http://www.corporateportfoliomanagement.or..._intranet.html.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you.

I market CA Clarity On Demand. Below, I have listed some factors that make an On Demand solution easier to adopt:
• Pre-configured for rapid implementation. As there is no software to install, the service can be provisioned quickly. All the user needs is a web browser, logon credentials and some training.
• Pay-as-you-go Subscription Pricing. This option allows you to only pay for the seats you are using and allows you to add seats as you need them.
• Financially Compelling. There is no infrastructure needed — hardware, software or people. Because you do not have to run the application in your own data center you don’t need to buy and configure servers, operating systems, databases and web-server licenses. This model also allows you to get value from using rather than operating the application.
• Continuous and Immediate Access to the Latest Features. This allows you to defer upgrades to the service provider. SaaS delivery enables the service provider to deliver fast upgrades to the latest versions and additional options are easy to deploy and configure.
• Uses Operational Expense Budget Spend. Many organizations prefer not to go through the often arduous capital expenditure justification cycle. Because you only have to license the number of seats you use, a line of business can start small and easily add seats as they expand their project portfolio.

Hi Anon,

I would only add the following. Another compelling reason to adopt a SaaS solution is risk management. In the SaaS model, the provider bears all of the risk. The customer (user) risk in just about every risk category is minimal to the point that for many SaaS applications, like PPM, even if the cost of the SaaS alternative is more expensive than the traditional in-house installed (which is rarely the case), it is still a very attractive business proposition and alternative.

Great post and replies. ~ Mark

Remember that things like patches and upgrades for SaaS applications tend to be done on a monthly/qtrly basis, the responsibility would be on you to do that and test the changes if it were in house.

The other question is will the vendor at some point only provide SaaS solutions and not maintain the on Prem equivalent?

Based on experience, try to speak to clients already using that tool in a similar environment to you to understand comparative speeds and the good and the bad of using their product.

PPM SaaS solutions are often chosen for faster deployment, reduced infrastructure costs, automatic upgrades and easier scalability compared to on premise tools. They enable remote access, real time collaboration and better integration with cloud ecosystems. Security and compliance are also vendor-managed. CONTUS Tech and other saas software development companies emphasize multi tenancy and uptime to deliver consistent performance for PPM platforms.
