I have 16+ years of PM experience--about 12 in marketing and 4 in Sales. I want to continue learning and am looking into getting PM certification. I will probably move into other areas of PM such as Operations, etc in the near future.

I love many of the articles and tools of Ganthead, but wanted to get your opinion of the best PM certification for me to pursue -- Ganthead's IT focused one, PMI's, etc.??
Thanks . . .

I've heard from many sources that PMI's PMP is THE certification to get for Project Management. Some other certifications exist (such as Comp TIA's Project+) but they don't really have any market viability at this time. I would say aim for the PMP (I am).

PMI's PMP cert is the gold standard in the USA, just go to any major job site to verify. Today, without the PMP cert, your resume will be used to line bird cages.

PMP by PMI, hands down.

If you still need convincing, go to careerbuilder and monster and dice, a few of the large job portals. Type in PMP as a search term and see what you get. Also type in others like comptia's for grins.

A little more advice....if a hiring manager does not know what a pmp is, chances are they dont know about any other cert out there and in all cases you may be faced with pushing methodology on a resistant, pm-challenged organization.

Hope this helps.
