What experiences with challenges of Managing Projects during End-of-Year, Christmas, New Year and any other Major Holiday Break?

Are there additional risks?

Are there additional human resource complexity?

Even though this is personal I guess, have you sent holiday Christmas holiday greetings? yes? no? why not?

Kiron - So those "use it or lose it" means unplanned vacations and OOO days? interesting risk.
"use it or lose it" should be planned vacation days. It is just that everyone seems to plan to use these at the same time.
Personally, I took every Friday off in October and November to use up my "use it or lose it" days, because I knew many people would be out in December. One of my team members took the entire month off to visit family in India.

In the IT world, holidays usually are opportunities for deployments. The longer the weekend, the better the window for doing implementations and/or maintenance. Luckily, the work can usually be done remotely.

While I may add a seasonal greeting to my email signature, I much prefer expressing my Holidays greeting in person.

Good Question, George.

From real estate development point of view, during the periods in question, there are usually lots of absences especially from the on site teams. There is always higher risk of delays in those periods and higher risk of security on site breaches which could end up with vandalisim and damages that could delay the project too so additional measures are normally taken.
Rami - that's exactly why I posted the question...

Quoting from you... "There is always higher risk of delays in those periods and higher risk of security on site breaches which could end up with vandalisim and damages"

I just think that we ourself sometimes as PMs are thinking on our well deserved time off, and do not pay attention to the criticality.

Thansk for your input, great as usual Rami...

You're very welcome George.

You have a point - I've seen many cases where people do not pay attention to critical times.

It wasn't so long ago that HP was furloughing employees for two to four weeks in December whether they wanted it or not! That seems like a much bigger risk than the usual drop in manpower and focus that happens to us all.
Very good advice here, just realizing that December is where 80% of unplanned leave takes place is a good start for the risk register.
I do not e-mail holiday greetings, but I usually hand out a dozen or so cards a year.

Kiron, one of the risks especially if all or a significant majority of the team out is that you can pay both a penalty for the period approaching shutdown (especially at Christmas) and also a similar penalty for restart (getting back up to speed) of a project after the break. This can add a burden in both schedule and effort to the project.

Holidays? What does it mean?

As Stéphane mentioned in IT usually we deploy during some of the key dates.
