its almost impossible to predict what technology will look like in 5 years. Just look at the last 5 years and you will see what I mean. Therefore any IT strategy should be principle based and not focused on any specific platform or sofware. By creating guiding principles and objectives that are in alignment with the company's stratgic direction you can have a strategy that can easily flex yet stay consistant to the needs of the organization. I would start by creating a list of questions that could be used to test whether IT is on course or not. These might include: How is IT leveraging the organization's ability to add value to its stakeholders? Are IT's metrics consistant with the metrics for measuring the company's success? What is the state of IT's relationship with its user organizations? How is the CIO seen by his/her peers within the company? By the CEO? What percentage of IT is dedicated to support versus innovation?
The answers to these types of questions should help frame the strategic initiatives that IT needs to puruse. Saving Changes...
