PMP failure

I have failed on the pmp exam.

Should I wait to Version 6 to study new material or should I try once again with v5.

What are your advices ?

Hi Stéphane,
Try to clear first what you started and then take on new challenges. So I would stick to V5 and make sure the knowledge is acquired. This is done once you have more than 80% on mock tests.

Don't be demotivated, failure indicates success is coming soon to you.
Sticking to V5 better because being aligned with V6 will take time to all.
I suggest you to align your values with the PMI values (Responsibility, Respect, Honesty & Fairness) which is key to success. This is because most of the questions are value based and we answer them from our value system which has a difference with the PMI's and get no score for that.

I could not avoid responding. What are the PMI values and where did you get these from? These and others are universal values and exist in every culture and religion. So, these are not unique to PMI or to PM.

Further, what do these values have to do with failing the PMP exam?

You are right – we all have those values, irrespective of individuality, community, caste and creed, and religion. Basically our list of values includes all and it is same for everybody (most of the cases) but Order of Priority (with variable weightage depends on different aspects and phase of our life which develop within us thru’ Nature-Nurture partnership) in the list is different for different individuals / community / religion etc. for a particular behavior/action.
So every individual has so many lists of values with different and unique order of priority for different aspects of life (personal life, professional life, health, wealth, love, self-development etc.)

I mean to say “Order of Priority” in the list of our values dictates the label of ownership of values. PMI keeps those four values in the top of the list with top priority for PMI community members for their project professional behaviors or actions (again not for their actions/behaviors in personal life). That is why I call it as PMI’s Values. All of us having those values in our lists for project activities but not on the top of list with top priority like PMI (might be same too in few cases).

PMI decided the values priority list from the values of project managers who were successful in managing project on consistent basis in their life. It comes from modelling techniques. Therefore, PMI beliefs if its community members inculcate the same value-system they can make project successful.

Same action is taken by different individual driven by different value-system (as you know Values are the drivers of our actions/behaviors) will bring different results as actions produce results. The Values determine the beneficial / detrimental results of our actions for mankind (as you know radioactive elements can be used to make Hiroshima or nuclear power plant for electricity – these are all about for our value-system). Values are driver; Values are guider – just like compass. It implies if we operate (take action in our project work front) from different Values Priority List our actions/behaviors will not bring same result. It needs to be standardized globally within the PM community to have successful project on consistent basis. Sound technicality mixed with Values (modeled from world leaders in a specific field like project here) in right proportion can assure us project success. Project Managers are PMI representative, so they are right persons to disseminate PMI culture and values which is most important parameter for project success.

To do so PMI adopted those values, Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, for whole PM community and made mandatory to follow keeping those values in the top of the Priority List whenever and wherever we will be involved in project management professional activities. PMI beliefs our actions driven by same Value System will bring same result (standard service), bring project success. And that’s true!

Additionally, please refer 5th Edition PMBOK – 1.1 Purpose of the PMBOK Guide – 4th paragraph to clarify the same. The following link too:

I wanted to pin-point that our values list must have those four on the top with utmost priority order when we will appear for Certification Exam because PMI would like to test us right from beginning whether we have same value-system or not in project environment. In case of “NOT” we are unfit to be right representative.

For PMP aspirants I would like to mention here simple technique how to identify value misalignment: whenever you see a question has two or more answers seem to be right as per you.
To handle this situation just follow PMI value-system irrespective of your practical and cultural (project) value-system. Give only importance on Responsibility, Respect, Honesty and Fairness. You can land down to only one correct.

Yes you have to try once again. Try to complete the exam before March 26, 2018. The exam analysis report can give you insights on which areas need improvement. Focus on those areas.
